Description
The Signatures Tester is an interactive tool that tests the deployment of your email signatures. This shows you how your signatures are processed and applied to emails based on the settings you have specified. The Tester simulates sending an email from your chosen sender to your chosen recipient, and checks any applied signature rules for each enabled signature in the order they are stored. It then provides a breakdown of how the rules affect the deployment of your signatures.

Signatures in folders
If you have created folders which store your signatures, the folders are shown by a folder icon next to the folder name in the Signatures section. If you applied folder rules, all signatures in the folder are affected by these rules. If a signature does not meet any rules set for the whole folder, it will not be applied.
The folder icon. If you do not have any folders, only individual signatures are shown.
Select the arrow to expand the folder. This displays the Rules and Result sections.
The Rules expandable shows all the rules that were evaluated. Each rule has a Success (green tick) or Failure (yellow cross) icon indicating whether the rule conditions were met.
The Result expandable informs you whether the signatures were successful and, if unsuccessful, the reason why they could not apply.
- Success: If all conditions for the signature are met, all rules and the folder will have a green tick icon and the result will show Signatures applied.
- Failure: If any conditions are not met, the rules and folder will have a yellow cross icon and the Result will show Signatures in this folder were not evaluated. This is then followed by the reason for the failure.
For example, the following screenshot shows two folders: one that has failed a test and one that has succeeded. The folder called AUS has a yellow cross icon, and the Rules show that there is a sender rule in place for this folder. The sender entered in the tester is not a member of a specific group, so the Result is Signatures in this folder were not evaluated due to folder conditions. This means that none of the signatures in this folder can be applied.
The folder called UK has a green tick, meaning that all the signatures in this folder met the conditions for the Rules, so the signatures can be applied. The Rules and Result for a folder, showing that the conditions for a sender rule were not met, so the folder failed the signature test and signatures could not be applied.
Individual signatures
Signatures are indicated by a card icon in the Signatures section. The signature icon. Each signature is also identified with its signature name.
The Signature Tester checks the following conditions for each signature:
- Enabled for client-side/server-side
- Senders
- Exceptions
- Recipients
- Date/Time
- Advanced Rules (Server-Side only)
Select the arrow to expand each signature. This displays the Rules and Result expandables for that signature.
NOTE: For individual signatures, the Rules and Result evaluation applies only to that signature. For example, if you are testing multiple signatures, each signature will have its own Rules and Result, as the rules are assessed for every enabled signature.
The Rules expandable shows all the rules that were evaluated. Each rule has a Success (green tick) or Failure (yellow cross) icon indicating whether the rule conditions were met. Rules that you did not set are greyed out, showing that they are not applicable to this signature and are not checked by the Tester.
The Result expandable informs you whether the signatures were successful and, if unsuccessful, the reason why they could not apply.
- Success: If all conditions for the signature are met, all rules and the folder will have a green tick icon and the result will show Signature applied.
- Failure: If any conditions are not met, the rules and folder will have a yellow cross icon and the Result will show Signature not applied. This is then followed by the reason for the failure.
The Rules and Result for one signature, showing that all the conditions for applicable rules were met. There are several greyed out rules, showing that these were not set by the user and are not applicable to the test.
As a further example, the following screenshot shows a failed test. The signature has a yellow cross next to the signature name, and the Rules show that although the conditions are met for the first two rules, the conditions for the rule called Date/Time trigger were not. The date/time of the test does not match the date/time chosen for the rule, so the Result is Signature not applied.
Campaigns
If you have created Campaigns, they are indicated by a card icon in the Campaigns section.
The Campaigns section.
The Signature Tester checks the following conditions for each Campaign:
- Enabled for client-side/server-side
- Senders
- Exceptions
- Recipients
- Date/Time
- Advanced Rules (Server-Side only)
Select the arrow to expand each Campaign. This displays the Rules and Result expandables for that Campaign. All rules and results are processed in the same way as signatures.
The following table shows the order in which rules are processed when evaluating a signature. For more information on the signature rules, see Manage Signature Rules.
Product Type | This rule checks whether Server-Side or Client-Side is configured. |
Recipient is | This rule checks if the recipient is internal or external. |
Sender is | This rule checks all the senders specified in the email. The list of senders can use a combination of rules, such as individual users, groups, and advanced queries. |
Recipient Rules |
This rule checks all the recipient rules defined. The list of recipients can use a combination of inclusion and exclusion rules. |
Date/Time |
This rule checks the date and time rules. |
Body |
NOTE: This rules is only applicable for Server-Side.
This rule checks if there are any messages set to exclude or apply signatures via trigger text, using the Advanced Rules for Server-Side deployment. These rules are always evaluated last. |
Error | Description |
Signature rules are preventing any signature being applied. Please view the Details for more information. | This typically occurs when signatures are not enabled. You cannot test a signature before enabling it. |
Only a single recipient email address is permitted |
Currently, you can only test Server-Side signature results with a single recipient at a time. To test for multiple recipients, you must run multiple tests. Emails are automatically split for internal and external recipients and signatures will be applied based on the recipient settings for your signatures. |
