Description
The Signatures Tester is an interactive tool that can help you check which signature(s) should apply to a user or email based on the settings you have specified. You can use the Signatures Tester to check client-side and server-side signature rules.
When a signature test is run, signature rules are checked for each signature in the sequence that they are displayed on the All Signatures tab. The Signatures Tester is a simulation and does not actually send an email. This tool is useful if you are making changes to the signatures and want to make sure that the user receives the signature as they are expecting.
To run this tool - you need to enter some basic details only, such as sender email address and recipient email addresses.
- It applies to server-side and client-side enabled signatures.
- It is available for both Admin and Editor roles. For more information on permissions, please see the Difference between Editors and Admin?

Folders are illustrated by the following symbol:
- A green icon with a tick shows that the sender meets the conditions specified for the folder.
- A yellow icon with a cross shows that the sender does not meet the conditions specified for the folder.
- For further information on why the sender did not meet the conditions specified for the folder, you can expand the Folder and the Rules section.
In this example, the sender did not meet the conditions of the folder because the sender is not a member of the group: - After checking the folder results; or if you do not have any folders then please check the results for the signatures.
- Signatures are illustrated by the following symbol:
- A green icon with a tick shows that the conditions specified for the signature have been met.
- A yellow icon with a cross shows that the conditions specified for the signature have not been met.
- The Signature Tester will check the following conditions in a signature:
- Senders
- Exceptions
- Recipients
- Date/Time
- Advanced Rules (server-side only)
- Enabled for client-side/server-side
- If all conditions for the signature are met, all rules will show with the green tick icon and the result will show Signature applied.
Example: - If a condition has not been met, a yellow cross icon will be displayed and the result will be Signature not applied.
In this example, we can see that the condition for Date/Time trigger was not met:
In general, the rules are processed in the following order:
Product Type | This rule checks what is configured: server-side or client-side. |
Recipient is | This rule checks if the recipient is 'internal' or 'external'. |
Sender is | This rule checks all the senders specified in the email. The list of senders can be a combination of rules, such as individual users, groups, advanced queries, and so on. |
Recipient Rules | This rule checks all the recipient rules defined. The list of recipients can be a combination of inclusion and exclusion rules. Inclusion rules imply 'Any recipient is'. This can be a combination of individual recipients and domain rules. Exclusion rules imply 'Except where any recipient is'. This can be a combination of individual recipients and domain rules. During the evaluation process, if any query matches the exclusion rule, then the signature will fail. |
Date/Time |
This rule checks the date-time settings for the required signature. For more information, see how you can apply a signature for a specified time period. |
Body |
This rule checks if there are any messages set to exclude signatures in certain scenarios. The rules set in the body are always the last to be evaluated. |
The Signature Tester is not able to evaluate any additional conditions specified outside of the Exclaimer Cloud console. This includes:
- The Identify Messages to Send to Exclaimer Cloud mail flow rule in Exchange Online.
- The Exclaimer Exchange Routing agent installed on the on-premises Exchange Servers.
- The Content Compliance rule in Google Workspace.
