Scenario
You have an existing Server-Side signature and you want to only apply it to the first message in an email chain. You want it to not apply to any subsequent replies or forwards.
Resolution
You can use Advanced Rules for Server-Side signatures to define trigger text in your signature. When the signature has already been applied, the trigger text is detected, and this stops the signature from being applied again in any future messages in the email chain.
For applying a different signature instead, see How to apply a reply signature for Server-Side.
To configure the Advanced Rules:
- Log into your Exclaimer subscription and select Signatures from the menu sidebar.
-
Identify or add a short, unique string of text characters in your signature that would not usually appear anywhere else in the email. Copy or record this string of characters. This will become the trigger text for the Advanced Rules.
Some examples include the Company Registration Number, part of an office address, or part of your legal disclaimer.NOTE: We recommend that you do not use special characters in your trigger text, as these can cause problems due to UTF-8 encoding. - From the All Signatures list, locate your signature and select Manage Rules.
- Select the Advanced Rules tab.

Open the Advanced Rules tab.
-
Under Server-Side Content Rules, select the Do not add signature if message contains checkbox.

Select the checkbox to enable the options.
-
In This Text, enter the trigger text that you identified in Step 2.
NOTE: We recommend that you do not use special characters in your trigger text, as these can cause problems due to UTF-8 encoding.
Enter the unique text.
- Under In, select the Anywhere in email trail radio button.
- Under If this signature is not applied, select the Do not process the next signature radio button.
- In the unsaved changes banner, select Save.
